Chatswood rewards a wander. Everything — two malls, a dozen cuisines, a concert hall and a Metro station — sits within a few hundred walkable metres. Here's how a local strings it into a great day, whether you're visiting or just crossing the bridge for a feed.
Morning — coffee & the markets
Start with a proper coffee on or near the Victoria Avenue mall. If it's a Thursday or Friday, you've timed it right: the Chatswood Mall Markets fill the pedestrian strip with food and craft stalls. Graze a little, people-watch, and ease into the day.
Late morning — shop the malls
Hit the shops before the lunch rush. Turn one way for the upmarket Chatswood Chase, the other for the everything-mall Westfield — or both, since they're five minutes apart. Not sure which? We settled it in Chase vs Westfield.
Pro move: shop first, eat at noon. By 12:30 the dumpling and yum cha queues are out the door.
Lunch — dumplings or yum cha
This is the main event. Go for soup dumplings at Din Tai Fung, weekend trolley yum cha around Anderson Street, or graze the Mandarin Centre and Chatswood Interchange food halls if your group can't agree. Our Asian food guide has the full playbook.
Afternoon — The Concourse & a breather
Walk it off at The Concourse, the civic square with the library, theatre and concert hall — check the program and you might catch a matinee. Need green space? Lane Cove National Park is a short drive for a riverside stroll. Details in stay & explore.
Evening — Korean BBQ & boba
Round out the day with a sizzling Korean BBQ dinner around Help Street, then a brown-sugar bubble tea for the walk back to the station. Hop on the Metro and you're in the city in 20 minutes — or just roll home happy.
The cheat sheet
- Get here by train/Metro — it drops you right in the middle (skip the parking; see the FAQ).
- Eat at the edges of noon to dodge the worst queues.
- Thursdays add the mall markets to the mix.
- Bring a card — tap everywhere, tipping not expected.
